Ovarian Cancer Research
As practicing clinicians, we are constantly perplexed
by the lack of advances in research in this area -
partially due to the lack of funding.
There have been many ground-breaking advances
with other cancers like breast cancer; but, unlike breast cancer,
over 70% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer
will die within 5 years of diagnosis.
The deadliest gynecologic cancer, ovarian cancer affects over 20,000 women each year and
15,000 women annually die from the disease.
It is the 5th leading cause of cancer death among women.
There are NO early screening tests currently available leaving women vulnerable to a fatal disease.
But ongoing research is being done in the areas of detection, treatment, and even vaccination.
This is very exciting!
